Environmental Stewardship

An integral part of Forest Moon’s vision is to design and build the “Healing Haven” cancer retreat center, a homestead free of the products that contribute to cancer. The building team was carefully assembled based on the group’s commitment to utilizing non-toxic materials and conserving natural resources. While at the “Healing Haven,” participants will have the opportunity to learn about products, energy sources, architecture, and wastewater systems that promote sustainability and protect our environment from the kinds of carcinogens surrounding us in our daily lives.

Building Progress

Phil Blood, co-founder of Forest Moon, oversees the Building Committee. He and his wife Cindy have pledged a donation of five acres of land, already cleared for building, to the organization. Located on a quiet dirt road in rural Whitingham, Vermont, the property is surrounded by fields and forest. A beaver pond and 70 acres of nature trails are accessible on the Blood’s abutting property. The 70 acres are committed to a sustainable forestry plan under Vermont’s Use Value Program to ensure healthy and diverse forest growth and wildlife. Roy Scott, an architect from Mechanicville, New York is working on the construction plans of the “Healing Haven.” A goal of 4,000 square feet has been set to maintain the intimate environment of the retreat and minimize the ecological footprint on the land. Forest Moon has assembled a skilled team of professionals to collaborate on the design of the “Healing Haven” project.  A set of drawings depicting Forest Moon's Healing Haven are available here.

Ecological Engineer Tad Montgomery
TAD MONTGOMERY & ASSOCIATES Ecological Engineering
118 Washington Street
Brattleboro, VT 05301
Phone: 802-251-0502
E-mail: Eco - at - TadMontgomery.com

Tad Montgomery has over twenty four years of experience designing systems and technologies that are more benign to the environment.  At Forest Moon TM&A is designing code-approved ecological wastewater treatment systems that will recycle nutrients and eliminate pollution into the groundwater.  The technologies that Cindy & Phil Blood have chosen are a combination of waterless (or ultra low flush) composting toilets and an ornamental constructed wetland to treat the grey water.  It is anticipated that this ecological wastewater treatment system will cost roughly the same as a conventional septic system, and be much prettier.

Other areas of work for Tad Montgomery & Associates include: energy security and renewable energy development, building energy assessment and conservation, biofuels, permaculture design and sustainable agriculture, alternative community economic development, corporate and institutional greenhouse gas audits and remediation strategies, holistic health, strategic planning and bioregional organizing.
